Serial Killer ‘Dexter’ To Get Game Treatment
Showtime Networks are teaming up with clothing designer-turned-gaming magnate Mark Ecko to bring that most charming of serial killers, Dexter Morgan, to the world of videogames.
Dexter, the subject of a Showtime series of the same name, based on the books by Jeff Lindsay, is a serial killer who keeps tries to maintain something of a moral compass by satisfying his homicidal urges by slaying other killers.
Dexter’s adoptive father was a cop who taught him not only how to spot a potential victim, but also how to cover his own tracks after committing a crime. Dexter himself works for the Miami PD, as does his sister, Debra.
How much of that actually factors into the creation of the game remains to be seen, as so far both Showtime and Marc Ecko Entertaiment are keeping hush about any details. Marc Fernandez, vice president of MEE, did say that “Our game designers, writers, and artists are going to give Dexter’s morally complex world the kind of interactivity that gamers will love.”
Which means, one presumes, that we may end up both committing and solving horrible murders. Dexter certainly has plenty of material that would make for an excellent gameplay experience, but I have my doubts that any game would truly be able to convey the delicate morality or perverse charm of the character, no matter who made it.
