Hyundai to Begin Mass Production of Hybrids in 2009

AFP. Hyundai Motor said it will start mass producing hybrids next year, beginning with a hybrid version of its compact Avante (sold in export markets as the Elantra).

Current versions of the Avante/Elantra offer a choice of a 1.6-liter or 2.0-liters gasoline engine, or a 1.6-liter diesel.

The hybrid models will then expand into mid-size vehicles in 2010, with fuel-cell cars also being produced in 2012, [Hyundai] said.

Hyundai has produced about 2,800 compact hybrid cars since 2004, largely for government agencies.
